what does the main jet size mean?

I know what all the jets do and everything/ BUt what does the actual number mean? just curious

the bigger the number the more fuel the jet can flow thus makeing the jet "richer" the bigger the number the bigger the hole the fuel travles threw. There more to this, such as needle jet taper and such, but its all very simple
