Default 2001 Foreman 450es....shift motor question

I have just about every forum on this ES stuff and hated posting another one. I tested the shift motor with 12v and it worked up and down. I tried it with a 6v batt. from a lantern and it tried to move but wouldn't move enough to engage into gear. I tried this b/c the motor doesn't get 12v, correct?
Everything else on this quad has been changed out, except the wiring harness. I MEAN EVERYTHING!!! Except the motor too.
I guess the question is, should it work with a direct 6v connection?
Thanx in advance.........Ken

Thank you. For some reason I thought I read that only 5 - 7 volts was sent to the motor. I don't think I'm getting ANY volts there.??????
