2001 Fourtrax Rancher 4x4 ES problem with shifting/etc
#1
We have what we believe is a Fourtrax Rancher 4x4 ES (TRX450ES). At least that is what we can determine from the serial number. If you know how to check to be absolutely sure, please enlighten us. The ATV was running and shifting fine - went riding down by the lake and washed off the tires in the water - everything still ok - came home & turned off and 10 minutes later went out to start, started it and then it went into 1st gear, but would not go into 2nd or 3rd and stayed in 1st - had to manually shift back into neutral and then tried a little later and could not get it to go into any gear. The thing wanted to stay in neutral - on speedometer it says it is in neutral and it is as it free-rolls, however both the green neutral light and the red reverse light are on at the same time, but it is in neutral. You push the shift buttons up and down and nothing works down there. Have checked all fuses. Tried to do some of the tests we saw online by others yesterday and could not get anything to work right - perhaps we need someone to supply the correct instructions for running the tests to either reset or at least get codes to tell what is wrong. Today my son pulled the front end off to find out what going on and found out there are 2 plugs that plug into this one component. One of the plugins has lots of wires and the other has 4 or 5 wires. When you unplug the one with the 4-5 wires, then turn key on with plug out, it then lights up normally but will not make any shift noise. When you plug it back in the red reverse light comes back on. We also did check for spark last night and getting none. Anyone have a good idea of where to start on this problem? I guess trying to get it to show us some codes would be a good starting point. Don't want to just start plugging money into parts if we can reset it or find the problem fairly simply. Would love for someone to volunteer a phone number where they can be reached and who wouldn't mind conversing on the phone a couple of times with my son - I am at work today and he has the day off and is trying to make the most of it by actually getting someone who will walk him through things to check while on the phone, rather than involving me in the loop. But I will do what I have to do to help him out!
