Best trail quad of all time (along with its little brother the 300EX)! What I like about mine is that I can put it in 1st gear, and idle through the nasty technical stiff.
Does well in the sand, but it isn't exactly a mud machine....
Very high quality! The engine will run forever with just some basic maintenance. Fair amount of hop-up potential with just some simple mods. Good handling and good suspension. Great quad for a beginner adult or teen, yet an experienced rider won't get bored on it.
Mine is nearly 10 years old now, and all I have ever done is replace the rear axle bearings.
Gearing is easy and cheap to experiment with.

Welcome to forums plouffe.
Agree. Really rock solid quad. Pipe and filter really wakes it up. May not be the best mud machine but, still a fun mud slinger!
Only problems I've experienced is that the front wiring harness was a mess on mine and had to be worked on on my buddies also. Don't know if its a common problem but, sounds like may have been on older ones.

Great all around quad. I bought a 450R when they came out but have kept my 400ex for the trails.
As stated a pipe and filter with a rejet will really make a difference on the 400ex.
You'll enjoy it for sure.
