Default 1985 Honda TRX250 Fourtrax

I just got a 1985 Honda TRX250 Fourtrax practically given to me. It didnt run when I got it and a piston ring was stuck so the engine wouldnt turn over. Once I got the cylinder freed up I cleaned the carb. The float bowl was literally full of dirt so I dumped the dirt out and did a total cleaning of the carb. I did NOT use a rebuild kit which I am thinking is what is causing my current problems. The engine has great compression and looks like it will bite you if you get too close but runs great for a machine that looks like it shouldnt, LOL.

Idle issue: sometimes will not idle, other times idles high. Never idles normal without shutting down.

Carb issue: have to cover the end of the carb for the engine to start. backfires thru the carb every once in a while but not very often. Backfires thru exhaust quite often. Slightly bogs at full throttle. Rarely but sometimes just wont go without shutting down.

I am thinking I just need to get a rebuild kit for the carb but since I found this forum I thought I would see what others think. I am also haveing issues with the wireing and such. None of the lights work and neither does the starter. Im not too worried about these until I get it running correctly. I am also going to have to rebuild the front end but again this problem is minor and I will worry about it once the engine is right. I would also appreciate any suggestions on any sites with low cost bushings for this model.

Thanks
Robert
