Default Setting idle screw on 07' foreman 500

Do you really need the special tool and the rpm gauge to set low idle on a 2007 foreman? I have the manual and it says to set it to the highest rpm and then adjust the idle stop screw for proper idle speed. can't you just set the idle screw by ear and then adjust it down with the stop screw? I'm having an intermittant stall upon stopping, and it was suggested that i'm running lean at idle. I bumped the idle up with the stop screw and it seems to have smoothed out my rolling idle and when I had it out one time after doing it it seems to have fixed the stall. any help would be great! thanx!
