if you go from stock gearing ... 13-38
and you change to 14-36 do you need to get a new chain?

If your chain is good and not stretched out, there should be enough adjustment to make that work, I tried 13/36, and could not get the chain tight enough, and there wasn't enough slack to take a link out, so I went back to 38 rear, I had a 14 on front a few years ago to run smaller tires on back, but had to remove the case guard to get the chain to go on, if you do some grinding, you should be able to use the case guard with a 14, guess I was too lazy to do any tweaking, and my son is riding a 440 ex now, so the 300 sits a lot !!!

the case guard is important.. unless you want a leaky motor with a self oling chain lol....i made a case guard for mine.. lot cheaper than a new side cover

Y2daT, what did you make your case guard out of? and do you have any pics of it? I was thinking of going 14/36 on my son's 300ex, but don't want to grind down the stocker, it might weaken it and not protect as well.

Well it is set up with 14/38 for the gears. Why would only the front sprocket being different make that much of a difference in top end speed. My 1996 that i had years ago seemed alot faster.
