Im interested in buying the Stage 2 hotcam for my 400EX. My mechanic said that i would also have to pick up a different timing chain tensioner if i used a aftermarket cam. My question is where could these be bought?

 

I have never heard that you have to use a different timing chain tensioner. They make replacements if yours breaks but, they are stock specs.

 

I replaced one once on that same bike. The new hot cam didnt have a decompressor on it, like the stocker did, and it was very hard starting, and hard on the starter motor.

 

Ya, think you supposed to remove the decompressor.

 

I replaced cams on a brute force once (Hot Cams) and they came with the centrifical decompressors.

 

On the EX you remove the decompression plug and spring off of the cylinder head. It's not needed.

Don't know about the chain tensioner. I do know that stage 1 is a direct drop in and most stage 2-3 cams require different valves. The cams can give you alot more power or destroy your motor if it does not have what it needs. I would make sure you have all the facts before doing it. Are you doing it or is someone else doing it?

 

Stage II Hotcams are drop in cams and do not need different valves. I would also question why a new chain tensioner is needed. Get an explaination from your mechanic.
