My honda 420 is making a grinding noise when u let off the gas. U can feel the grinding in your feet. The clutches are not slipping but the noise is comming from the tranny. The higher the gear i;m in the rougher the grinding. Does any one have a clue what it could be I would appreciate any info.

are you firmilure with engine breaking? if you just got the atv thats probly what it is. when you let off the gas, the tranny uses the engines own compression to slow down the atv.

its probly engine breaking, unless you have had the atv for a while and its diffirent from engine breaking, then im not sure

It shouldn't make a grinding noise, though. My wild guess would be something with the sprag clutch. Hopefully one of the pro mechanics will chime in.

I"ve had the atv since october of 07 and it just started the noise today after i hung up in a hole. It sounds like 2 pieces of metal grinding together but only when i let off the gas. I'm lost

The sprag clutch is a one way kind of thing built into the centrifugal clutch. It is what transmits compression braking when the engine is idling and the centrifugal clutch would not be engaged.

I've never heard of them making a grinding noise, though. Usually people describe a loss of compression braking, and maybe the sound of something spinning winding down when the engine is shut off...

Just went off warranty! Don't ride it until you can fix the problem!
