Hello,
I do not own a 400ex but what I have heard is that the 416 kit and 426 (may be 424 but I'm pretty sure it's 426) are very good. The only one I've heard negative things about is the 440 kit, which leads to overheating. As for the sprockets, I think you should count how many you have in the front and bump that up by one. I believe that 1 in the front is equivalent to many in the back. Another thing to keep in mind is that increasing the number of sprockets will hurt your low end, but if you love your top end, go for it!

id go for the 416, but the cam change is whats gona give u the most power. i would suggets looking at and mabe even changeing the valve seals while your in the head. they tend to leak on the 400ex.

DROPPING A TOOTH IN THE FRONT IS EQUAL TO ADDING THREE IN THE BACK. CHANGING THE FRONT ALSO MAKES IT ACCELERATE FASTER BUT MAKES THE ENGINE RUN ALOT FASTER TO. THE REAR SPROCKET IS EASIER ON YOUR ENGINE. FIRST GEAR IS HELLA LOW ON 400EX SO EXPECT TO NOT EVEN USE IT ANYMORE.
ADDING A TOOTH TO THE FRONT IS SAFE, AND CAN ADD A LITTLE LIFE TO THE ENGINE, NOT TO MENTION A COUPLE MPH ON THE TOP END.
