Could be valves but I would ride it awhile and see if it dosen't clear up before you tear it apart.

Here's the deal. You have a 23 yer old machine and who knows how it was taken care of? A 23 year old machine that was taken care of very well, will have some wear on the bore and guides. An engine that was not taken care of will have a lot of wear on the bore and guides. This is a given.

Now you have two choices.

Live with it and go have fun on your quad or rebuild the engine to stop the smoking.

The choice is yours.

BTW, adjusting the valves won't solve the smoking problems. Guides and seals might, but not adjusting.

that is probly the valve guide seals....if it quits smoking when its warm....I'd juist ride it ...keep a extra plug and plug wrench handy.and ceep a close eye on the oil level... if it begins smoking after it has warmed up ...rebuild the topend...I rode my$ 50.00 86 250x for two years and it never stoped smoking or leaking...i kept a quart of oil wedged inbetween the front bumper and frame ...and rode it like i stole it...lol

artnate30 it could be smoking from excessive carbon deposits builtup inside the combustion chamber , this could be caused by a number of things like having been overfilled with oil , a rich jetting of the carburator or even bad/stale fuel or slude buildup inside the crankcase ; here's a good and cheap way to clean the combustion chamber of the carbon deposits !

Get a can of Sea Foam from any Auto Parts Store or your local WalMart Super Center and mix some gas to your fuel tank just follow the mixing instructions on the can , Sea Foam will help burn off the carbon inside the combustion chamber ; you can even add some to your engine oil ( again follow to mixing instructions on can ) to clean out the sludge from the engine and run the quad for an hour or so and drain the engine oil then change the old oil filter and add new oil to proper level !

On the mixed fuel in the gas tank just run a tank full through the engine this will clean the fuel system and the combustion chamber and in most cases stop the smoking , i've seen this stuff work on all type of engines both 2 and 4 strokes ; and also on Diesel engine as well and it's been on the market since 1942 and still carries a money back guarantee not many products do this now a days !

You can get it for $6.99 + tax at most Auto Parts Stores , and Walmart has it for for $5.69 + tax and it really works like it claims Sea Foam helps lubicate the valve seals and alot more than i can tell you in this reply , and for the cost it can't be beat and you can pull the spark plug and check the color of the electrode/end of plug to determine if its a jetting problem ; if plug electrode is black you're running rich , white/grey to lean , light brown/tan color is what the proper jetting should be !

Good luck with the quad , and welcome to the fourms ; and i hope this helps you out !.........
