400ex wont start cold weather
#4
Gotta love those cold blooded Hondas. It's electric start I'm assuming. Open the choke, pump the throttle about 8 times and then hit the button with throttle closed. Also, is it jetted properly? Have you ever changed the jets? What elevation are you at?

jets are good it is jetted but right ocnce it starts will sit there and idle all day 1000 feet around there yes eletric start</end quote></div>
Mine's extremely cold blooded as well. I've heard that going up to a 40 or 42 pilot will help. I haven't tried it yet, but it is on my short list of things to do this winter.

Try the pumping the gas like I said before. That seems to work perfect on my 450.

You should put in a 42 pilot jet. You just pump the throttle 3 or 4 times and it'll fire right up and idle no matter what the outside temp is. That was one of the first things I did to my '08.

Cold air is more dense than warm, so it messes up your fuel:air mixutre, making you lean. Play with the fuel screw and that may do it, or you may have to fattern the pilot jet just a bit.
Also, it has a pumper carb, so if you pump the throtle a few times like has been suggested, that will prime it. I do that, and I never need the choke, not even in the coldest weather.
Make sure you run thinner oil in winter, like at least 10W30, or 5W30 if it is really cold. An ester synthetic like Maxima 530MX if you are willing to pay the tab......
Also see your owner's manual about running a hotter sparkplug in very cold weather.
