Default 400ex to 426 Q's

alright fellas.
i jus bought a 99 400ex that im changin over to a 426, I already ordered the kit and a HMF slip on. its a wiseco 11:1 kit. the questions here is the cam, stage 1,2 or 3 ? I ride dirtbikes, the only reason i bought this bike is because it was too cheap to pass up and i needed another project. the only thing this bike will be used for is racing at the sand dunes here in louisiana, mainly short drags. what cam would be better? is a stage 1 jus another name for a OEM or what? I was thinking bout the stage 2 for this project.

as for the head.....does changing valves and porting and polishing and all that work enough to make a difference? I build muscle cars so i take all the time in the world to do this on my projects but is it worth it on a bike?

last is the jetting. i know someone out there has dont this same rig and figured out what the best jets are this set up. any help will be greatly appreciated....thanks

Welcome to the forums man. I'll try to help you a bit. For the cam, stage II hotcam. It's a drop-in cam and they seem to be great cam's. HotCams uses stage I stage II stage III as levels of cams. Stage 1 adds mid-low rpm power, Stage II almost equivalant low and more mid and high. Stage III designed for 440 kit and all top-end. I think it also requires hardened rockers.

Porting and polishing helps tons on the old 2-strokes. I know they do help on 4 strokes as well, not sure how much.

Jetting, I can tell you the DynoJet for your setup with lid off airbox is a 170. Don't know the equivalent kehien. That's without port-polish job. I'm sure it will step up with a port-polish job.

Don't blame you. I'd probably go ahead with the port and polish too. You'll probably have to play with the jetting a bit to find the sweet spot. No biggy. Keep us updated on how she does after you getter' goin.

Don't have too. Don't hurt to throw on a fmf powerbomb when you get the money.

Not required with the Hotcam stage I or II. Thats why Hotcam is so popular.
