I have this bike and when ever it gets cold,it won't start.I can put it in my shed ,put on a fire and within a couple of hours the damn thing will start.I drained the carb to see if there was any water,put gas line antifreeze in the tank.Theres plenty of spark!Anybody have any suggestions,or the same problem?

 

Hondas are just really cold blooded. Your ride is electric start right?

 

woody64 it sound's like either you have a problem with the carburator choke or the valve spec's need checked and adjusted , but i would check to see if the choke is working correctly ; the carb need's to be removed and cleaned first !

Then the choke cable need's to be checked to see if it's working right , sometime's the plastic nut on the end of the cable that screw's into the carb body get's loose ; and i've seen them over tightened and broken/cracked i had one on my old 86' Honda TRX350FM 4x4 and my old 93' Suzuki LT4WD 300 KQ that the nut was broken when i got it back from my local Dealer !

The Dealer let a young kid service them and needless to say he didn't know what he was doing , the Dealer did give me a need cable when i told her about it ; i stopped taking my quads in for repair and service after this happened to me i do all my own work now !

You really need to get a good Service and Repair Shop Manual that covers your quad , they will pay for themselves with just the first complete serving of your quad ; good luck with your quad and welcome to the forums !........

 

Valves would be the first thing I would check.

 

Your Rancher has a carb heater! Turn on the key for a couple minutes and let it sit while the carb warms up before you try a cold start.....

Heavy cold oil will bog your crank. It's going to turn over more easily at a cold start if you are running a thinner oil like 5W30 in cold weather.

thanks guys ,the bike is electric start.How do I check to see if the choke is working right?When she warms up and then starts I have to put the choke on and it won't start without it so it must be working right,right?I do notice that I have to idle her up on the carb for about 5 minutes and then idle her back down because by then shes idlying to fast.

 

Get your valves adjusted and your carb jetted

 

Put some full synthetic 0w-40 and it will start up better. The 0w does not thicken up on cold nights for easier cold starts plus Full synthetic oil flows better in extreme temperatures cold or hot or a conventional oil.

Conventional 10w is like jello after being parked on cold nights and your starter is working harder and slower tying to churn that jello up with the crank.

 

To check the choke, just pull off the air filter an look into the carb. Run the adjuster up and down to see if it is working.

Wouldn't hurt to check you owner's manual to see if a hotter plug is called or at your operating temperature!

 

on the left hand side of the carb is a primer button push it a couple of times bike will start a lot quicker
