You will first have to check/clean the ESP couplers for water/moisture , and the wire harness for any damage/shorts ... Then unplug all the ESP input/output couplers and see if it still blows the fuse .. It is impossible to check trouble flash codes without a dash/display ..

Here are the ESP copmonents ..

made a little headway with it everything plugged without blowing fuse had a bad connection i guess but still no shifting does the display have to be there possibly to complete the circuit and where does the display plug in the only open plug i see is on the left had side close to the gas on off valve

The display doesn't have to work for the ESP to work , but the display must be working to retrieve the trouble code/s ...

Here is the meter coupler ..

Green is ground .. If the green isn't hooked up on the ignition switch then turning the key to "off" won't kill the engine...

Do you mean the owner used the emergency shifter to drive the bike..?..

As far as "fail safe" goes .. There are 12 codes and out of the 12 codes the ECU does 11 input or output tests everytime the ignition switch is turned on ..
