Default my 250x gear acting up?!

I think the chain is a cheap @$$ kmc 428 from what i can find, and it will not stay tight for longer than a quick spin! Anyways, when i tighten the chain and ride it feels like it slips and catches on the sprocket constantly. It seems to be mostly third gear. third gear slips, bucks, and catches even if you switch gears wide open most of the time. I have heard the 87's have a weak 3rd gear so i'm sketched that it might be the cog in the bottom end?!?! I know that's a pain and know nothing about spliting cases and my dad says he will not ever do that again after doing it on something of his years ago. I mean i hope it is not that but i'm not sure what to do right now? I am thinking about getting rid of that stupid chain that was supposedly new with a ek 520 o-ring atv chain or parts express 520 oring or xring and replace the worn rear sproket.... help?!

idk they are probably stock honda sprockets for the bike which would be 520 type if so , i havn't had it long. the chain on kmcs website that looked like it was a 428 so i made the assumption.

i would get a new chain and sprocket kit. i dont think a 428 chain would work very well with 520 sprockets. get that in check and then see if your still having problems.

Check the rear bearings. If they are shot, the axle will move causing the chain to jump teeth.

Have you taken the front sprocket off and looked at it? The teeth can strip on the trans output shaft.

i tightened up everything and checked all the stuff i could and it seem s like it's the clutch, the way it engages and disengages by itself at what ever speed you try to give it in third. the guy said it had a racing clutch in it and i know 1st and 2nd grab and hold excelent.

you might have to split the case and look at your gear set...maybe 3rd has some missing or rounded teeth. whats 4th and 5th like?
