i can't get my R to start. its got a brand new piston and rings. i've check everything. its got spark and all. only thing it has done is back fire a couple times. i thinks its the compression. the compression should be about 180 right. mines alot lower. what do you guys and girls think. i tried 3 different plugs too!!! let me know asap if possible. i wanna ride tomarrow!!!

put peanut butter on the spark plug. :)

What do you mean by a lot lower. If your bike keeps back firing you may have a broken reed.

400exalltheway Feb 9, 2001 05:45 PM

i got a compression reading of 140 give of take. i just changed top ends and still nothing. what i mean by back firing is that is the only the that will happen. any ideas. i do have another elctrical system that i can try in case that spark i am getting is to weak. any other ideas let me know. thanks

DID YOU CLEAN ALL THE OLD GASKETS OFF AND AND USE NEW ONES? IF YOUR COMPRESSION IS LOW, YOU HAVE A LEAK SOME PLACE.

I would ensure that your ring gap is correct first. Even if the piston and rings are new, you may have bored over too much (did you bore it out??). Next make sure to use all new gaskets, and definately check your reeds to ensure they are closing and/or not broken. your electrical system sounds like it is operating properly, but I have seen CDI's drive me crazy at times also. The way you explained about lack of proper compression sounds more like reeds or improper ring/piston size. Hope this helps out!

i didn't bore. brand new piston and rings like i said. later tonite i will change electrical systems just in case. reeds are fine becuase i used the top end i'm using now only last weekend and plus their brand new.

ROLLpsi425R Feb 9, 2001 10:33 PM

do you know if it was bored before.

400exalltheway Feb 10, 2001 07:57 AM

neither of my top ends have been bored and i'm using a brand new piston and rings.

whats the stock compression supposed to be? 180 right. would to low of compression make it not start. i think its my head gasket maybe to. i will change it. but i think it won't start becuase of the compression(airleak at head or base gasket i think). do you guy and girls think it could be that. all my friends, people from work and my neighbor all came up with that the compression it low.i triend a different electircal system and still wouldn't start. so i have no idea. all help is appriecated
