Latest project is a 86 TRX250R with a 86 ATC 250R motor. Slow jet is #42 & main jet is #145(both stock according to Clymer manual). I have a Curtis Sparks pipe(can't get in touch with Mr. Sparks for help) & am planning on installing a K&N filter with no airbox. What would be a good jet # to start with?? All help appreciated.

Gooch, I also run a Curtis Sparks pipe on my Warrior with a pro design air box mod & filter. With the Moto Force vented lid, I had to go three sizes fatter on the main to get any top end: I run a 155 now at my home elev of 3200'. By "slow" jet, I assume you're talking about the pilot jet. If so forget that. Just go up to a 155 & see how it performs on top. You can always drop one size leaner if necessary.. better than doing it the other way around. Remember, the pilot jet only controls the mixture from idle to 1/4 throttle, so unless you like to plunk along just off idle, leave it alone.

THE AZ HARD PACKER,

P.S.With several of the top ten riders currently in the GNCC using Sparks Racing engines, guess where he is most of the time?
On the circuit, & he's a one man shop.

Although you didn't give you elevation your profile shows you live in WV, so I'm assuming you are @ or above 3000FT?! Dont run w/out an airbox. My 87 250R didn't run any better without it, just had to clean the filter daily! Anyway, assuming you are running the stock carb (34mm) put the needle in the second position and try a 152 and work your way down from there, a 155 sounds too rich! I live in So Cal and ride from anywhere between sea level to 3000 ft. Engine mods include Paul Turner pipe, boyeson rad valve, and thin head gasket. I have had no problems w/ this setup.

Thanks Brandon & Hot_Shoe. I may take your advice & run the K&N filter in the airbox & just drill the lid(worked on my Quadracer). As to elevation, Charleston isn't in the big mountains- in fact we are about 600 - 900 feet where we ride most of the time. I ordered a 150, 155 & 160 & will go with the old trial & error. Thanks again!
