Default help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Same thing happened to me. I had to replace the shift plate in the very front of the motor. The earlier 2000 thru 2004 were notorious about doing this. Honda had an update a few years back but it has expierd. It is an easy fix if you do the work yourself and the part cost is about 45.00. When you remove the old shift plate look VERY close and you will see they have spread or broke.

To get it to start now find the set of wires that come out of the bottom rear of the motor by the pull rope. Most loop up over the engine right in front of the top of the pull rope. Bare the rubber coating and find the green wire strip a little and wrap a piece of wire around it and ground it. Your neutral light should now be on and the four-wheeler will start even though it's in first gear. When you get it fixed properly just tape the stripped are of the wire and the rubber coating. I had to do this to my Recon as being that when they rebuilt the bottom end they put the sensor in the wrong spot making the four-wheeler think neutral was between 3rd and 4th gear. I did what I told you to do and it will start no matter what gear it is in.

On my 07 Rancher 400 to start it while in gear just pull the right brake lever in and it allows it to start. Not sure if this works on other years but it does on mine.

Be sure to check the shift plate first before you buy ECM. I still think this is the problem.
