what about amsoil synthetis? reconranger
#1
this question is mostly for reconranger. im going to change the oil in my honda's and ordred a gallon of amsoil full synthetic. amsoil website showed plenty of numbers and stetistics, basically it was superior to mobile1 T4, royal purple synthetic, and plenty of other petrolium based oils. i know you recomend redline, and i use maxima in the winter, but is amsoil a good choice for synthetic? i would like to stick with maxima, good smell i think, but they dont offer a full synthetic 10w40
pricewise all i could find for redline was $13 a Qt. vs $40 a gallon-or $10 a Qt amsoil symthetic
i was running mobile1 T4, and atleast amsoil has a better cold flow # and higher shere weight than T4.

Maxima Extra, Ultra, and 530MX are all 100% synthetic. They are ester based, with some PAO thrown in for "balance" (ester and PAO compliment eachother in many ways!). Extra is available in 10W40 and 15W50, and Ultra in 5W40 and 5W50. 530MX is of course a 5W30.
Ultra is Extra, with the addition of an organic friction modifier that does very special things on the surface of hot metal, and it comes in more unconventional weights. 530MX along with Redline, is on the cutting edge of synthetic chemistry! These are both highly friction modified, yet are wet clutch safe. Wet clutch safe friction modifiers, is where the future of performance oils is headed!!!
If I can't find Maxima locally, I get it here: http://www.onoffroad.com/c-MAXIMA-LUBRICANTS.html
Last I heard, Amsoil is 100% PAO and that is a problem. PAO molecules have a neutral charge, and will not stick to freaking anything! Ester on the other hand is charged, and its polar molecules stick to metal like little magnets. So, when you shut your engine off the esters leave a nice film behind for when you start it up next time (most engine wear occurs on a cold startup!!!). PAO on the other hand drains down completely, leaving you unprotected. So for this reason, I would never run a PAO, unless it was fortified with a good bit of ester.
