Is my 400ex reliable in water?
#1
So I plan on later on hydroplaning my 400ex across a small lake or puddle but I have been wondering, is my engine case sealed from water? Say if I were to sink about 2 feet, would my engine be okay? I don't want to hydroplane it if I am going to end up breaking a lot of parts. I know the engine is sealed from sand I am just not sure on water. Any information is helpful. Thanks in advance!

As long as you don't drown your air intake or your muffler, these do well in water. (You have the stock snorkle, or is your airbox opened up????)
Still, I wouldn't wallow around in the mud or anything like that! I ruined a set of rear axle bearings because I got caught in a desert flash flood, and rather than wait it out I tried to ride out of it and got very fine silt in my bearings.

I tried to hydroplane across a cove on the missouri river. I'm guessing it was about 140-150ft. I did not make it, the front in sank in with about 15 ft. to go, and i flipped over the bars. It was only about 3 ft. deep where I deployed, and it took me about 3-4 mins to get my head straight and swim back to get it. I pushed it to shore and it wouldnt kick over right away (using the push button). I had a buddy pull me with his quad and I popped the clutch and it kicked over on the first try. No harm done. Don't over use the electric start as it could burn your starter and battery out. That night, I took the airbox apart and cleaned it all out.
If you do sink it, try to keep it running the best you can. If you notice water running into the exhaust, give it gas to help push the water out.
