Default 00 Rancher ES electrical problem

Issue: complete electrical system failure...no display. no lights, no horn, no starter, etc. It is as if the battery is disconnected. The bike has been running flawlessly since new. Was in use yesterday, turned it off to go in the house for a few minutes, came back and found it dead.

Troubleshooting done: verified the following using a digital VOM - battery is holding 12.6 volts, ignition switch has voltage on red feed wire, engine kill switch has voltage, all fuses in main fuse box are good, all connectors under front plastic are connected and appear to be in good condition(none damaged).

Anybody have any ideas? I do not have a wiring diagram or shop manual so it is bit difficult to trace the wiring. I was originally thinking ignition switch, but isn't the typical path - battery to ign sw to kill switch and onward from there(starter solenoid, or ECU, etc). Since this unit uses a magnetic starter switch, I assume it is controlled by the ECU...which also probably controls the display and just about everything else.

What say the collective? Anyone have a wiring schematic you can email me? Anyone seen this problem before?

Thanks
Jim

I would check the regulator/rectifier . .. Honda doesn't have an actual test for the reg/rec .. PM your email and I can email you the wiring & switches info ..

I had a similar experience last week. Would you please send the same info to me? I will send a PM.

My bike is a 2003. Mine will turn over but no fire. Checked for voltage at the coil...none. I have 12 volts at the kill switch though. If there is no test for the rect/reg, do you just replace it and hope for the best? Then on to the ECU and CDI if that doesn't do it? That could run into several hundred dollars.

Just a reminder to everyone(myself included), remember to start your diagnostics process at the most basic level. In the case of electrical issues, that beginning would be to clean and tighten the battery connections. I did just that this morning. Cleaned the connectors(cables and battery) with emery cloth, coated with dielectric grease, reassembled, tightened correctly, turn the key and the bike fired right up...just like new. So all this worrying and studying schematics was a waste of time. All I needed to do was start with the basics.

I had the same problem today with my 2003 rancher 350es, but the 30 amp main fuse was blown and as soon as I would try to replace fuse it would blow again. It was the regulator with mine if I took it off the frame the bike would run great and wouldn't blow fuse but if I put regulator back on the frame it would blow fuse right away.
