Default 300ex oil capacity issue?

i changed the oil/filter in my 300 for the first time yesterday.the oil on the dipstick originally read over full, but i assumed the original owner was lazy and just put 2Quarts in it. the capacity is 1.7L i measured it out and poured it in the 300. now it reads slightly overfilled on the dipstick, not much mabe .1L over. whats the deal? i let it drain completely and even poured a half cup of gasoline threw the crankcase to make sure there where no chunks of oil leftover in the case.

im not concerned about it being "overfull", but is the recommended capacity off?

did you let it run for a minute to fill the filter and re check the oil level. Another possibility is that your dipstick mite be off or lose.

i let it drain for 20 minutes, changed the filter, and added enough to fill the filter. let it run for 30 minutes and the oil level was still overfull. dipstick is tight and im measuring on level ground.

are you screwing the dipstick back in? if so thatl give you a high reading. only dip it in.

it might not take exactly what it says. the motor always has some oil laying around in it, even after draining it. i just replace filter and fill it up till its full on the stick. usually round 1.8q i wouldnt sweat it, if its not the exact measure of fluid. longs its full, your safe!

Pouring gasoline in your crankcase, is about the dumbest thing you could ever do!!!

I was thinking the same thing Recon. Why would anyone pour gasoline into the crankcase? Doesn't make any sense.

Yeah, don't ever do the gas in the crank again. It prolly won't kill it but it's not good. Put new oil in it (regular cheap motor oil), idle it for 5 minutes and drain it out. Then put motorcycle oil in it, 1.7 L and don't worry about it. Just make a mental note of where the reading is on your dipstick and add oil when it needs it. An inaccuracy of .1L is not even a blip on the screen to worry about.

i use gas, or seafoam, to clean engine sludge. its been recomended by mechanical professionals for years. and if you do it correctly, wont do any harm to your engine! pour a small amount in the crank case, no more than 1/2 cup, and allow to drain out. i always measure how much i put in and how much comes out, always get more out than in (oil sludge that wouldnt go past the screen gets broken down and can drain) i allow plenty of time for for the gas fumes to dispurse, then fill with oil.

if you dont do it correctly, LIKE PORING GAS ON THE HEAD-where it will pool and not drain, it will over dilute engine oil and ruin it. but i use it to get sludge thats built up on the screen, thats at the bottom of the engine where oil will coat again before its started.

ill continue to use do this if its needed, but doubtful ill ever have to do it again-frequent oil changes with synthetic. i was just wondering about oil capacity being way off. thanks for your replys though!
