Default 300ex rear brake pads wont fit?!

I bought some EBC sever duty brake pads for my 300ex and I pushed the piston in as far as itll go, but there is only enough room to fit a quarter into the space, definately not a brake rotor. Any explanation for this? I bought the bike used for dirt cheap so is it possible the bike is not a 2002 like I thought it is? Even if its not a 2002, would that even matter as far as model# brake pads it would need? I guess ill have to call rocky mountain atv if i cant get this to work.

Any thoughts on this problem would be great.

My guess would be the parking brake adjustment bolt is not backed off, it mechanically pushes the piston in to make up for brake wear, on the left side of the caliper, there is a bolt with a lock nut on it,12mm I believe. loosen the nut, turn the bolt counterclockwise (like taking it out of the threads)and your piston should be able to be pushed back all the way. To reset the parking brake, turn the bolt in by hand until you feel it hit resistance, then hold it with a wrench while tightening the lock nut. Hope this helps you out.

I concur. It's probably the parking brake that needs backed off. On another note, look at the frame in the front. It should have a sticker on it with the model year.

Ok, well I did what you guys mentioned and I got the piston to move in more however now I have incurred another, more frustrating problem. The bracket on the caliper that mounts to the bracket on the rear axle is in the way. I think it is supposed to float but it seems to be frozen. Basically, the brake bad is now deeper in the caliper than this bracket, so the bracket is preventing the disc from sliding between the two pads. I tried a c clamp, but that didnt help, i tried a hammer, that didnt help, and I tried to loosen the bolt with the 6mm allen head (it seemed to hold the bracket and has a rubber cusion on it) and I broke an allen key. The thing wont budge.

I can really use some advice at this point. I just wanna get this damn brake system done!

Not sure I follow but it shouldn't be so tight that it won't mount back up to the bracket. Are the triangular shaped spring clips behind each pad?

hmmm, yeah they're there. OK, let me start from the top. There are two bolts that hold the caliper onto the bracket. The bolts essentially go through a bracket attached to the axle/swingarm and then thread into another bracket attached to teh caliper.

Now, the bracket attached to the caliper i think is supposed to float/slide in and out. Basically, the bracket is fully extended from the caliper so that the brake pad against the piston is now deeper than the bracket. Or said another way...the bracket is closer to the right side brake pad than the left side brake pad is to the right side.

Does that clarify?

I'm not at home but if I remember right, the pads slide in and out on 2 pins that you have to remove to get the pads in. The caliper will not necessarily be centered over the disk when it's on. The caliper doesn't float, the pads do the floating inside the caliper on those 2 pins.
