Is 400ex stock suspension reliable?
#1
So lately I have been jumping my 01 400ex a lot! Nothing big, the highest I have gone is probably 5 feet in the air. But I keep doing that over and over again for like an hour? Is the stock suspension on the 400ex reliable or is it one day gonna just give up on me? I have also red somewhere that their stock suspension are Showa shocks. I don't know if those are any good or not. Thanks in advance!

I only had the stock shocks on for a couple of years, but I was doing a lot of jumping back then (10 years ago). They held up just fine, but shocks are disposable so don't expect them to last forever. I suggest WorksPerformance rebuildable shocks when you are ready for aftermarket.
I also had a 300EX at the time and jumped it more than the 400, and its stock shocks also held up fine. My Z400 rear shock however, blew completely the week after it went off warranty!

When I was riding a lot I would jump from 10-15ft and blew out the front shocks. And after 3 more rides I blew out the rear shock. They are good, but not that good. Since it's getting old I would go ahead and replace them before they go out. Blowing one out does not make a very fun landing.

Reliable? Yes, for the most part. However the front shocks have a repuation for being horrible, like pogo sticks. Many guys replace them with 450R shocks that have been revalved and resprung for their weight, with great results.
Also the front shock mounts are known to crack when stressed. Motocrossers add a gusset kit to alleviate this problem.
