You can run synthetic, just not synthetic with moly addatives. If it says "Energy Conserving" anywhere on the label, don't buy it.

The Rancher i got had 100 miles on it , i changed the oil imediatly I assume it was honda oil in as it was the first oil change ever done on it and the oil looked nasty and thinned out, I am useing Maxima Extra full synthetic with 200 miles on the oil the oil still looks clean and feels the same as when i put it in. just from all the reading that ReconRanger has posted it is some good stuff but pricey so im sticking with on any machine i buy.

im changing the oil on this machine every 300 to 400 miles thats about every 2 trips trail riding I believe my manual says 500 miles but after seeing the old oil better safe then sorry.

Just my 2 cent. I run a little extra oil to get a little more cooling capacity but only about 1/8" high on the dipstick. Not too high because if you cause the oil to frougth and it will loose a lot of the oilling ability. You can check this by pulling the dipstick and looking at what is on it. It will be very bubbly, maybe milky looking, and it will read very full. The volume will increase because of the bubbles. Drain some let settle and all is right as rain.

I run a quart of 20-50 and the rest 10-40 for a Virginia summer and vice-versa for a VA winter. I use the 4-stroke motorcycle oil at Advance Auto. Not the Synthetic. I change the oil after a single off-road race, only 2 hours. Or after a couple of rides, maybe 5 hours. $10 bucks is not much to pay for piece of mind and a clean engine. I change the filter every other oil change.

I have used regular car Castrol GTX without any problems too. Even the cheap Castrol.

One more for Maxima, if I had money. It was awesome in a XR650L that I put 20K miles on without a single problem and it would get 60 mpg even when I flogged it. I mean no problems 1 air filter, two front tires and 4 rear tires. Nothing else and I dual sportted it.

Whatever you buy buy something for wet cluthces (aka motorbike oil). Furthermore I would highly reccomned Synthetic 10-40 for temperate all year ridin. Oil changes depends on useage, and tendancy to go swimming. Usually every 100-150 hours / season should do.
