Pick a motorcycle specific oil that is rated API SG/JASO MA. The SG insures that it has a descent anti-wear additive package, and the MA insures that it is safe for your wet clutch. Beyond that, the synthetics are better than plain old petroleum, and the ester synthetics are better than the two other types of synthetics (PAO and Group III).

For an inexpensive petroleum oil, I like Maxima Premium. For a synthetic/petroleum blend, Maxima Blend. For an ester based synthetic I like Maxima Extra. For a performance oil, I like Redline or Maxima Ultra and 530MX.

10W40 works in most of the country for a summer oil. A 10W30 for milder weather, and a 5W30 for very cold winter weather. (I would only run a 15W50 if I was in the very very hot south, and silly enough to ride in the mid-day heat.)

i used the factory 4 stroke oil and its works fine for me, synthetics are better in faster quads for their higher rpms. in a 250 like ours, you cant feel a difference

Until a couple of years ago, Honda HP4 and GN4 were indeed rated API SG. Then, they quietly downgraded them to SJ. What does this mean???? It means that they decreased the levels of the protective anti-wear additive ZDDP. Why would they do this??? Because of catalytic converters on street legal bikes (ZDDP contaminates the catalyst).

I guess this makes it simpler for dealers, not having to stock different oils for off-road and street bikes....but because of this I would no longer run Honda's branded oils!
