Again, the EX is air cooled and will run hot at times! Besides, lots of other things come into play, like valve overlap, etc., etc. The engineers who designed your EX knew this, and therefore speced 92 or greater. Get real.....you going to believe them, or some Wolverine owner?????
And....don't mess around here! If it is new and on warranty, get it back to the dealer quick......
so anyone who owns a Wolverine is simple minded? did you not notice I also own 2 Hondas, both for many years? before the 300ex, my son rode a Recon, so I am VERY familiar with air cooled engines, my friend. your statement are a he!! of a lot more restricted and "simple" than others I have seen. Yes, following recommendations in a manual are fine, but common sense works as well. Take a look at a car manual, they recommend 7500 miles between oil changes under "normal" driving, would you leave regular oil in for almost 8000 miles just because some "engineer' told you to? And if your manual recommended you rub one out before every ride, I suppose you would be excusing yourself before getting on your ATV. Don't be a sheep, think for yourself.Originally Posted by reconranger
This is a classic case of simplistic thinking! Just because some other engine of whatever compression needs a certain octane....doesn't transfer to any other engine out there!!! Well drained the gas and put new in and cleaned the air filter and it did not make a difference. So it is going to the dealer tomorrow.

use the straw of the carb cleaner spray can to blast out all the passages, then use air to blow out any thing that may still be in, if you can see carb cleaner squirting out, it should be clear.

Where do you get off giving the guy advice that is contrary to his owner's and service manuals, and would harm his engine and probably void his warranty if they knew about it????
Again, there are no absolutes that go from one engine to another, that is why the give you an owner's manual! Maybe try to peddle the bad advice in the Yamaha forum next time.....

If you had bothered to read the first line of my first post, you would have plainly seen I was not harassing, bashing,or belittling anyone, just offering a few facts and many years of practical experience, yet you have to blast everything I say, insult me, just to make it look like you are the only one that has anything of revelence to say? I guess I better spread the word, only Reconranger is allowed to post on any and all things Honda, so no one else suffers your wrath.

Personally, I would like to apologize for so many off topic posts, I try very hard to stay on topic,it is just that being attacked for no real reason just set me off. If I am wrong, please show me the facts, state plainly and politely where and why I am wrong, and I'm happy with that, no one knows everything, and we all make mistakes. When you snap back with mean spirited replies,it just irritates me after a while. I have no idea why Reconranger had to be so vehemenent on his replies, prove me wrong and leave it at that, I will accept it and let it be. I recently read another post of his where someone was looking for a new quad, and he told him to stay away from 4x4s, saying only hillbillies need to ride them, seriously, what good are comments like that?
Again, sorry for hijacking a perfectly good thread to vent, but he just rubbed me the wrong way once too often. I'm done, I'll go away now.

95wolv is right about the gas.The guy at the dealer says the quad is mad to run on 87 octane gas even though the manual says 92 or righer.

Good suggestion to drain and refill the tank. Also, be sure your tank vent is not blocked!
Normally, one does not do a valve adjustment until the engine is completely broken-in at 20 hours, but yours could have been off from the factory.
In any case, it should still be on warranty, so make it the dealer's problem!!!

Well got it back from the dealer today and they had to completley redo the carb and replace a float valve in there. It seems to run alot better now.
