Could be a cable adjustment, or problem in the sub transmission.

Hondamechanic would be the one to ask.

What I found on the TRX400FG/FA models is they will corrode where the steel passes thru the aluminum .. I would disconnect the cable at the sub-transmission and try shifting with a wrench to check if it shifts freely .. If it did much grinding then the rear cover may have to be removed to check the sub-transmission gears ..

I own an 07 Rancher and have found that I have to periodically remove the cover that Hondamechanic mentioned and spray it down with WD40 or PB Blaster. Word of advice do not shift with the cover off, it will throw off the gear shift arm thats inside the housing and is a real pain to replace while still on bike. I learned this through trial and error. Also be careful removing the cover so you don't damage the gasket.

I perform this maintenance about every 3-4 months depending on how much water and mudholes the kids hit with it.

Hope this helps.

Just for the record, you have a very different transmission than the old 400AT had....
