Yea I heard that in order to make 450 shocks go into a 400 you have to grind the top a bit so that they fit perfect. I am looking into that right now.

Its not much that you have to grind off. then you will have a smooth ride.

Are the 450 shocks good compared to the stock 400?

The 450 shocks are a lot better shock and you will have a much better ride.

Where exactly do you need to grind?

around the end of the shock were the bolts go through. The best thing to do if you get some bolt them up and see just how much you will need to take off.

Ok that sounds good. The stock rear shock is ok right?

I haven't had an issue with mine so far you may want to ask someone else about the rear.

yes suspension is key of course its hard to compete against a another machine with 10 more hp in every rpm range also!

400ex motor I would stay under the 430cc range, & or don't go high comp with the 440 unless you run the stronger head bolts, stock will stretch & thats why they blow head gaskets. might have to watch the temp but should be ok most of the time. I had a 440ex ported, cam etc.. modified carb it had good usable power. Way more than stock! but it all goes together head cam exhaust with big bore. Still not up to speed with a 450r. On the trails I stayed in the lead mainly cause a 400ex is a light & not tippy quad even in stock form.

Now I have a 06 450er it is different than the 04-05 machine. Both have good points. They both mod well & they have some many cams availible if you want more low end more top or all around etc.. A cam & pipe will wake them up. Suspension is better but its hard to beat that light feel of a 250r or 400ex in the air IMO.

450r shocks have more adjustments compression rebound, vs just preload pogo sticks lol & can be rebuilt or revalved like the 400ex rear.

There are allot of 450r going pretty dang cheap also so if you can sell your 400ex it might not be a bad deal. I am probably selling my 06 stroked (470r) with lots of goodies for like $2600 if you are looking.

Yea I'm taking Recon's advice and just stay with the basic mods. I still have to get a good airfilter for it, rejet it, and get some other stuff on it. My 400 is already piped so that is one thing off the list. I have also decided not to bore the 400 due to the fact that Recon has a point and is right about the ex's reliability. As for suspension, I am still looking into getting some 450r shocks.

P.S. Can anybody help me with rejetting? What is it? What are you suppose to do?
