Default too much for a 01 250ex?

its a 2001. stock. runs good but the rear diff need rebuild but probably needs a new carrier and diff. Also needs a seat and probably tires. He want 500 for it. Just looking for a good trail bike for the family. I figured 400 would be fair also.

Right off the top of my head I have no clue what the parts cost. I dont ever figure in cost of tires on used quads cause almost all used quads need tires.

What would the parts run in your area or on eBay.

I guess if I could get it on the road (not counting the tires) for $1000 or less I would buy it.

You can buy 01's on CL for around $1000 to $1200 that are nice and need no work or tires. Just keep your eyes open and cash ready. They sell fast when they are nice.

Cool.....I may have to look myself.

The 250ex is the the one with the "sport clutch" right? Im thinking that may be the route to teach my son to ride with a clutch.......he was wanting a bigger sport quad like a Blaster but the 250ex would fit his style a bit better.

Before I got into the bigger ATVs my son and I both had 250EX's for years. We had widening kits on them also. I am 6.4 and at the time about 250-260. These quads were fast even with my weight and size. They were also very easy to transport because of the size, easy on fuel and were bulletproof units.

The "Sport Clutch" wasn't available until more recently. The 2001 has an auto clutch.

Honda makes a good reliable bike, but the used 250 you are considering looks pretty roached and probably has more issues than the final drive assembly and swingarm. Abuse and neglect generally doesn't focus on only one part of the bike, so look for front end damage as well...worn shocks, bearings and bushings...as well as frame stress damage like cracks and dents in the frame tubing.

The suggestion of buying a better condition used one for more $ is a good one unless you are mechanically inclined and want to go through the whole quad to make sure everything is "done right"

well this 250ex im looking at is in pretty good shape. Thats just a bad picture. I havent heard it run yet but you can get a rebuilt rear diff for around 2-250 off ebay. New seat and it would be good to go. Rear bearings would just be a needed thing for a 2001 bike. And if the carrier need replaced cause of bearing wear then another 100. So i could easily be out the door with a running 250ex for under a 1k. I have seen them go for about 800 or less but im always about 2 hrs away and like you siad they go quick. This one is in a town thats no where near the big cities and thats the reason why no one has picked it up already.

I would prefer to purchase one that is in good shape from the get go vs having to fix from day one. Chances are if it has not been taken care of it will only cost you more in the long run. To drive 2 hours for a good deal is nothing. The 2 that I owned for 3+ years never gave me a issue. I never put a dime other than oil in them. My nabor purchased a fixer upper and that thing always had issues.

no i agree but with such a limited income. im just looking for something really cheap. I just sold a 250 2x4 timberwolf for 500 and thats my limit. Im doing a very small build on a 94 timberwolf 4x4. Just cleaning it up and putting good used axles on the front, exhaust, new seat, fully treated the frame for rust and repaint, bedliner on the plastics. Just some cheap restore that later i can do a full strip and rebuild. The only problem with the timberwolf is that they are a dead breed. Only real parts have to come off ebay and used is going to be the best bet. The 250ex is just a better choice for me since its a sport quad and have good aftermarket.
