all right, i was going to pute more money into my recon and make it almost = to a 300ex. well my mom said why don't i just by the atv i want. Well then i started thinking. i want a 250r or a 400ex. well also would a $3500 250r be a good fairly reliable atv. it only has like a pipe and silencer.

A 250R for $3500 isn't steep at all, depending of course, on the R itself. Since it's a supply/demand thing, they sell for just about whatever the seller wants.
The time frame on the engine rebuilds is way wrong, depending on how you're going to use the R.
What I'm trying to say is. . . .
It's the best there ever was and still is the best!

your 2 stroke theries are wrong. if you kids take care of your bikes they last a long time. i know guys riding on the same bottom end never rebuilt on there 250rs. hell there are some kids riding 80's dirt bikes that are still running. you do have to replace your top end you just check it with the compession gauge. its no big deal i rather service a 2 stoke any day over a 4 stroke.
heres my story on the price of a 250r. i called on one on the want ads he wanted $3200.00 i drove an hour to see it and told it was in excellent shape. when i got there it was far from excellent. i could only get him down to $2900.00 and bought it. i already have another $1000.00 and going strong on parts, and sandblasting. i will probably hit over $5000.00 total and still want more of the cool parts $5000.00 will just get it looking stock. i really didnt care because i was looking for a bike to redo and always wanted an R. i love the power band of 2 strokes and to me there easier to work on. i would be just as carefull buying a 400EX as to an 250R it all depends on if the owner just rides them in the ground or does maintenance. IT DOES NOT MATTER THE YEAR! thats my advice make sure to have a little money put away so when you do get one you can at least give it a good tune up.
and one more thing. go check some of those sand 250R's out and tell them there quads are only worth less than $3000.00 because there old. im sure they will get a good laugh.
good luck and have fun.
