believe it or not the soft plastics are a must if you expect them to hold up with any hard impact or cold weather driving....i have a 99 450 and had a 86 trx 350...the 350 plastic would crack much easier, but it was harder....i have found that a good coat of amorall covers a lot of sins....i believe in the dennis kirk cat you will find plastic scratch remover

The plastic on my XR's is very soft as I have had the front fender wrap around and touch the handle bar in wrecks, never a crack as it is like rubbermaid plastic. It also doesnt scratch nearly as bad as my rubicons does. Wish they would put it on their atv's

Me too! After the maiden ride on my new green Rubicon, I gave it a bath and towel dried it. After pulling it into the garage, I saw the scratches from the towel, plus lots of scratches & smudges from the easy going ride. I talked to the dealer and they said that they never dry ATVs with anything except compressed air. Hmmm, the owners manual says to "wipe it dry". Oh well, I understand that the plastic has to be soft to withstand cracking and breaking but it's a shame that the finish is so delicate.

BTW, Polaris is just as bad and Yamaha plastic seems a bit more durable.

Yes I was disappointed too after the first wash job, but up north here you need to have a pliable plastic that is flexible in cold weather. I will just keep waxing my 450 after I wash it, that's all. Pledge works good as does Mothers Color Back or Armorall.

I checked out the James Greene fender kit and it's certainly an option. Thanks a lot. I just wonder if the cover itself will scratch the plastic. I had a nylon bag tied to my front rack and the friction caused the plastic underneath to turn cloudy, after a couple of hours.

I'm sure that I'll chill out about the scratches after I recover from writing that big check for the Ruby. This might be one of those things that I shouldn't worry about since I don't have any control over it!

My Dad had a fit because they look so bad right away. Mop and Glo will do wonders though.

I was a little concerned about the scratches on my new RANCHER also but hey it's and atv not a LEXUS. And like the CHEVY commercial says, scratches give character. My 300TRX4X4 looks great with all that character.
