age old question, which 400 should i get next?
so back in 05 i bought a brand new 05 400ex. i upgraded from a yamaha timberwolf 250 4x4. so when i first started riding it, i thought it had all kinds of power. which it did. 5 years later i traded for a 2005 450r. i love everything about it, except that i miss the functionality of my 400 on the trails VS the 450r. riding the 400 i felt the power was ok but nothing exciting was going on. i had a hot cam stage 1, full pipe, jetted, K&N, open air box. so im curious as to when the time comes which 400 should i buy? i really like how reliable my 400 is. only had to replace two sets of rear wheel bearings, and a battery in the 5 years of owning this machine! im also interested in the z400, mostly because of the upgraded suspension, DOHC, and fuel injection! let me know what everyone thinks.

You can't beat the reliability of the 400ex. But if I had a choice, I'd go with the z. Had a 06 kfx, and loved it. But I sure would like to ride one with the fi just to see if it really does add any snap to the throttle. Don't know it they changed the gearing or not on the new ones, but a quick sprocket change was all it takes to get the z a little more trail friendly.
Heck, buy one of each.

EFI is not a Performace feature but more of just a different delivery on ATVs/ Motorsross. Here is a 2008 450 Moto cross shootout where the only EFI came last. Racer X Canada - motocross and supercross news and features from around Canada
I couldn’t really notice any difference between the EFI and carbureted bikes.
Heres a 2010 450 Motocross Shootout were the only carbed bike came in first. 2010 Motocross Shootout Conclusion - Dirt Bike Motorcycle Comparison Review - Motorcycle USA
Despite not employing electronic fuel-injection and instead relying on a Keihin FCR 41 carburetor, jetting and throttle response were spot-on in the high desert elevation at Racetown.
EFI may have some advantages, start better in cold and need no re jetting at heights ,put its really not a HP maker over a carb.

i know my 400ex was good at everything, but it was getting to the point where it just wasnt enough. i had a bunch of mods done to it, the only thing i didnt do was slap in a 416 piston. im hoping to work something out and hopefully get to try out both quads before i do anything. i really like the looks of the new 400X's. but when i ride in the winter months its nice not to have to put the wheeler infront of a space heater to get it fired up. thanks for the replies!
