Default Honda 350 rancher, Clutch problem.

When i put the bike in first gear, the bike tries to take off and dies. Now when i put it in first gear and give it the gas a little at the same time as putting it in gear it will take off and run fine. Once i am going with no problems and put the bike back to first gear and let the bike just idle, the bike still wants to roll.
I have adjusted the tension with the clutch screw on front cover. When i back off on the screw to get the bike to not move when it's in first gear, but the minute you give it the gas it makes a clattering noise in the front end. So i tightened it up a little at a time till i got to a point where it stops clattering but it starts rolling at idle in first gear, but will not roll in any other gear at idle. I need advice

clean the carb ( just the jets in it) that should cure the shutting off problem, and as for moving by itself, set the idle screw a little lower, do it while its running, the screw goes in it will idle up, back the screw out and it will idle down........., clutch is probly ok, just idled up too high....

Default 350 rancher clutch problem

I tried setting the idle lower, but when you put the engine in 1st gear it starts to roll. I have adjusted the idle to the point where the engine wants to die out and put it in gear and the same thing happens. Thanks for the reply.

Manual shift Honda ATV's have two separate clutches.

One is a centrifugal clutch, which is a drum type with weights held in by springs that have friction material on the outside. In the hub of the drum is a sprag one way clutch to provide engine hold back. The centrifugal clutch is what allows the quad to idle in gear.

The second clutch is the change clutch. It is a set of friction disks and metal plates in a basket, much like any other motorcycle clutch. The change clutch is engaged any time the shift lever is in the center detent, and it disengages as the shift lever is moved up or down. There is typically a threaded plunger to adjust the slack in this system to compensate for wear. The change clutch needs to disengage before the shifter moves so far that the shift drum tries to move the forks and make the shift (the gears need to not be under load before they will move easily).

Anyhow, the adjustment you are making is for the change clutch, which has nothing to do with it not moving at idle.

If the idle speed is correct (check it with a tach), I suspect you have a broken spring, or weak springs on the centrifugal clutch, or the center sprage drive is binding up.

Here's an image of the two clutches from Bike Bandit.
