Default I think my engine is cracked

08 trx250ex with about 40hrs

Bought 12/09 new

just noticed this weekend after a good washing.
Its around some of the bolts and along creases, a couple are over an inch. not leaking, but look like eventually could. We are in S. Fla so no cold weather riding, ridden thru puddles but never submerged and dont wash until the day after muddy ride since we ride till dark typically.

Warranty was out 5/10 just couldn't see $900 warranty that covered little. Is there anything Honda will do? want to take it to dealer first, though I know they wont do anything. Find a good welder before it gets worse? They are hair-like fractures

Please help thanks

Wow, that is truly unusual for the 250EX motor. And only 40 hours? Are you sure they are cracks or are they just lines from making the casting. If they really are cracks, it's very strange. That engine is one of the best Honda makes. It's a tank. Bullet proof. I bet Honda fixes it because it is so strange for that motor to ever fail. Just put up a fight and stand your ground. If you haven't abused it, then it shouldn't crack. And I've seen that motor be totally abused and run like new. Really unusual.

My bet is it's a casting line. I don't know what casting process Honda uses but sometimes there are casting lines and they REALLY look like cracks. You could dye check them to make sure.

Far from abused, 80# daughter rides it. I was really hoping it will be just me freaking out over something cosmetic and not a major prob. No one else rides it, we all have a bike.

If I dye it what am I looking for?? I dont want it taken apart by dealer to be inspected, put back together then they break a piece off near the bolt and tell me "sorry, cant fix it"

Thanks

Here is how it's done. YouTube - Aluminum block crack detection techniques (magnaflux dye penetrant) (I should say this is the second part of the process)

It will be too expensive to buy the kit to check. Last time I checked it was like 100 to $125 bucks for the kit.

If you really want to do this, take it to a machine shop and with will do it for you for a price.

I really don't think you will need to do this and I would not worry about it, but it's your decission.

I will post pics Sunday. Im glad to see it may be nothing to worry.

Its not the first time I really cleaned the engine up close, it seems I would have noticed them prior.

Size: 38.1 KBthese are the best I could do. There are "casting" lines which look easy to tap and remove, but these look nothing like them.
