Default Need advise Please

Looking at buying a 2002 rancher 350 4x4 manual foot shift ( trx350 fm ) the person is only asking 1,000 and would take 850 cash.
Problem he says he is having is after his last ride, when he unloaded it and tryed to start it, it won't start or go into gear.
I asked him if he has rocked it and checked the battery, he said yes to both.
My dilema is this, should i invest 850 dollars?
May be something simple but maybe not, either way i would have to have a mechanic fix it ( I am semi -mechanical, But i'm a HVAC guy,not experienced in engine tear down)
What are your opinions on this problem?
Worst case scenario?
Cost to repair?

Thanks for any and all help!

i can't think of anything that would keep it from both starting and going into gear at the same time. did you run a magnet in the oil? i had an issue with my 95 foreman 400 when it was only a few months old which kept it in first gear i can't remember what it was exactly..but they said it was a simple fix. 850 is really cheap this is kind of a gamble. if it were an es this would make more sense. on the plus side honda makes super strong transmissions unless the guy is really amazingly hard on it or likes to try and speed shift it. maybe it has a sensor that won't allow it to be placed into gear not running? i wish i could be helpful sorry...i have a trx250r nice and simple he he
