I have a 250r and ride in the woods and love it. No it does not over heat very quick at all unless you get the radiator cloged up with crap and air can not get enough air. It is not very good in mud because it is two wheel drive and it is a two stroke but with the right tires it will go ok. Any year plastic will work on all of them but the seat latch is differant on the 86-87 and the 88-89 so you would need a 86-87 seat latch and up front under the hood the 88-89 use smaller louvers but they will work with both plastics.

My 87 has never overheated no matter how hard I run it even in the woods. I think an R is great in the woods because the steering is so good but it takes a little more work to keep the motor on the pipe in the woods than a 400EX. R's do OK in the mud as long as you keep your momentum up but they do spin easy because of the 2 stroke power delivery.

I think the top speed on an R is about 74mph stock.

With a low end pipe and porting 250r's aren't good in the woods they rule. Big bore kits also help low end.
