Default Need advice on buy 2000 400ex

Im looking at a 2000 Honda 400ex and the guy wanted $2800 and I talked him down to $2000.It has nerf bars, white bros pipe, k&n air filter and itp ss wheels with holeshot tires 90% tread , he put a 250r rear end in it new carrier bearings and plus I get the stock rims and tires. He also maintained it regular after 3 or 4 rides and plastic is good but one small hairline crack. Is it worth? Can anyone tell me things I need to look at when buying one used?

Couple things. Depends on your location. Around here (OK) there is no way I would spend $2800 on any 11 year old quad. I picked up my '03 EX in '08 (5 years old) with fresh rebuild, ITP tires/rims, also White bro's E2 for $2300. I'd check Craigslist to see what they go for in your area.

Things to watch for.. Let it run till it gets warm. Flick headlights on-off and high-lo. I've seen many with issues in the wiring harness up there. Also, listen for a clicking noise from the engine. They are infamous for having timing chain issues. It will get loose and even break the guides on occasions. I'd ask him if he's replaced it.

The price is far to high. Mods do little to nothing for resale. In the north east its a 1500 machine.

I agree with jgar, it's way too high a price...mods don't add much to resale. In my neck of the woods, an 11 year old bike with race mods would get $1500, maybe $1700 tops if it were perfect. I would make him an offer of $1500.00, give him my phone number, and walk away.

I just bought a 2005 400ex for 1800 bucks I live in the northeast.. this thing was mint as mint can be.. and as someone else said mods do ZERO for resale if you ask me... i would almost rather have the bike stock in most cases.
