2000 400ex Fender questions

Default 2000 400ex Fender questions

I have a 400ex i bought from a guy back in December. Runs great, drives great, super fun. But the other day after loading it on the trailer to haul it to a ridin spot, i notice in my rearview mirror that my front fenders are flappin like crazy. I swear if they were a little bigger my quad would fly.

So i looked at it and it appears there should be some kind of a support bracket attaching the inside of the fender to the frame. These are missing and they have been since ive had it cause ive never noticed them before.

Is this a huge thing that i should replace? Its never given me an issue before so im fine without them?

Also, with mine being from 2000 the plastic is pretty faded and scratched. Is there something i can use to clean up the plastic a bit? I want to paint it rather than buy a new set cause its all in one piece still. I guess krylon makes a paint that bonds to plastic pretty well so ill probably use thst but i would like to get rid of some of the scratches first. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

It's really only an issue if you carry them on an open trailer...the flapping around will eventually fatigue them to where they crack and break. You could easily make replacement "brackets" out of metal strap or light steel stock to solve the problem

Krylon "Fusion" paint works well, but be sure the plastic is properly cleaned before you apply the paint. I think your best results will be if you are painting it close to the old color. The yellow works well on Suzuki yellow, the forest green also works well on Suzuki green ,and the red works well on Honda red. Make sure to follow directions and let it cure for several days to get the most scratch resistance out of the paint

It is a LOT of work to get scratches out of plastic, but it is possible. Using very fine grit emery cloth, you can sand out most scratches...the deeper they are, the more sanding you have to do. Work in stages, using the coarser grits first to get them leveled out, then use finer and finer grits until you are doing more of a polishing than a sanding.
