1984 Big Red 200 Backfires than dies and battery wont stay charged. ! Help!
Just got a 1984 Honda 200 three wheeler Big Red. 2 questions actually! Generally it backfired on deceleration than will dies and the plug is fouled. After I change it or clean it, it will run fine, sometimes for about 30 minuted sometimes a few rides. What do I need to do to fix this? Where do I start? 2nd. My battery wont stay charged for long. My pull cord broke the other day and right now I am counting on my electric start. I'll put a charger on my battery, get it charged and I only get a couple of starts out of it. Then its dead. Will not stay charged over night for sure. Usually if I ride it I won't cut it off because I'm not sure if it will start. Shouldn't it be staying charged and be able to us the electric start? I thought pull start was the backup. Is this normal if not whats up? What do I do? The battery is new, for ATV and fits in the spot but not 100% sure its the right one, what amps should it be?

Put a voltmeter across the terminals of the battery before you start it. You should have 11.8 or so on a full charge. Leave the meter there and start the engine. The meter should read maybe 14 volts. If it doesn't change and is still reading 11.8, check all the fuses. If all are good, it may be a stator. Might be hard to get for that.
As far as the fouled plug, it sounds like you are running too rich or burning oil. Does it smoke at all when it's running? How old is the gas in the tank? Maybe the carb needs to be taken apart and cleaned.
