adding a universal oil cooler to a 300ex?
#1
Have any of you added an oil cooler to your 300ex? Where did the lines connect to?
I've been thinking of adding an oil cooler but dont want to spend 200 bucks for one. I've noticed that most auto parts stores sell universal oil coolers of just the right size (for next to nothing...$30) but i have no idea of where the oil cooler lines would connect to. Anyone know?
I've seen somewhere of an atv shop that makes a oil filter cover that has holes drilled/tapped for oil cooler lines but i'm not sure who this is. Anyone know?
Thanks in advance

I love it. When i bought my 300ex (used) it came with a DG RCM race pipe/silencer setup on it which was WAY too loud.
Although i dont have a stock pipe to compare it to (in sound or power) i can say that it sounds alot better (much sportier, unlike that harley sounding DG pipe) than the DG pipe, and it definately runs way better now.
I also liked the way supertrapps included everything needed including a new bracket for the rear brake cylinder so it wasn't so close to the exhaust.
Right now i'm only running 7 discs. I think it comes with 10-12 discs (i can't remember for sure) and you can install anywhere from 4 to 12 of them. 7 seems like a good medium for me between sound and power.

Mike, one of my friends owns a 300EX with an oil cooler. It taps into the steel oil line that comes out of the case, then goes to the head. He says it greatly reduced the power fade on hot days, and no more clutch fade also. He used a large oil/trans cooler from a car at a junk yard, it cost around $20 I think. It looks like a small radiator, similar to what is on the 400EX, but much larger, it is not the round tube and fin design which I have heard are not as efficient. Hope this helps, Bryan

Hey Mike, I was just wondering, when you mentioned the rear brake reservoir relocator bracket. Where were you supposed to relocate it? The only place I found to put it was to slide it into the frame towards the airbox. I was wondering where you put yours? When me and my father replaced my '95 300EX's stock pipe, this Supertrapp is recognizingly louder, but compared to my friends Cobra piped warrior, it's as quiet as a mouse. As for the oil cooler, I'm not sure about it. I would like to find one cheap as well because I'm on a slightly older motor and I can feel the loss of power in the heat. So keep me posted on your project. Email me at Mx300EX@aol.com.

When i do finally get the oil cooler project done i'll post some pics and info here for sure. Next weekend i'll be going to see what oil cooler i can find.
As for the brake res. bracket...you have it exactly how i do. It basically moves it in more. The other pipe i had on there (when i bought it) was very close to the brake res. I'm suprised it didnt melt it.
If you have any more questions let me know.
