I would say banshee for speed. From my expirience a banshee is faster but not as good as 250r. One of the best thing about a banshee is you can still buy them new.THey are both great high performance quads. JUst what everone suits your style of riding.

this topic has been debated before search for it. I would say the 250r is better for woods and the 250r is extremely better for jumping than the bansee. 250r is for mx. all the pros either race them or have chassis based on them. 250r has almost identical chassis as the 400ex if not identical. I think the 400ex is a little taller to compensate for the bigger engine. The 250r is lighter than the 400ex. I would keep your 400ex and mod it. With a cam valve job and high compression. you could have a high reving 4 stroke. 4 stroke have a broader powerband wich helps in racing.
About maintence. 250r's are always used so they are going to have more maintence probaly but they do have honda reliability. BUt banshees hav 2 cylinders. carbs and everything. I guessing tuning 2 carbs isnt that fun. Also to mod a banshee it cost more and when it blows up u have 2 of everything to rebuild
