Default valve clearance keeps increasing, whats going on?!

Ok guys, any help would be much appreciated, im getting really tired of having to take my gas tank and such of f and adjust my valves after every dang ride.

My problem is, i adjust my valve clearance to spec (.15 intake and. 2 for exhaust) and my quad runs good and quiet. Within an hour or two of riding, i can hear my valves clicking and clanking. Get home, and there at about 3-4 times out of spec, rough guess their at about. 5 each or so. What the heck is causing this? And YES my adjusting bolts havebeen tightened all the way. I even tightened them a few pounds ovee what the torque rating said they should be. When i go to adjust them they are still tight too.

My only guess is that my rocker arms are wearimg where they touch the cam. When i last had the head off a week ago, they definately looked worn, but i figured that was normal.

Regardless, how could they possibly be wearing THAT much within 1 or 2 hours of riding?! I do not understand.

My bike is a 700xx. Also, i think when they are that loose i am loosing power, its hard to tell though, but i think i am. I finally got the chance to line my 700xx up against a Raptor 700 and KFX 700 yesterday. I got destroyed... I dont want to turn this into a debate as to what quad is faster, but lets just say i know i shouldnt have got beat as bad as i did, consistently. My valves were clickin and clanking like i said, so im wonderinv if i lost some power from them.

So why are my valves going so far out of spec so fast?! Any help would be appreciated!

Is your oil filter in correct? An oil filter in backward will cause cam an rocker wear fast...........

Yes, im pretty sure it should be. I mean, if i take the head cover off, the cam and everything is coveres in oil, so i know its getting oil to it. Whether its the right amount, im not sure, but im guessing it is.

I just look the head cover off again and looked at it. The gap has definately got to be coming from rocker arm wear. They are pretty worn down thats for sure. Im just wonderimg why they continue to wear so insanely fast? Is the very end made of much much harder metal, then once worn past that the rest is really weak? Thats the only thing that makes sense to me, could anyone clarify if thats true though? How could it weat so fast?

Do you know the history of atv? If you dont an just traded for it....IMO this cam and rocker can wear that fast if some where down the line the oil filter was in backwards and the person foundt out an change it back the heat from that ate into rocker and camshaft harderness and this will cause rapid wear...I guess I would take filter out just to see if it is in correct.....Will oil some backward and show some signs of oil BUT not enough to cool.....The oil filter oil seal should be toward the outside toward cover......If you dont mind check this an get back with us......Thanks.

I've had the ATV for almost a year, got it used and changed the oil filter a few times. I don't believe I put it in backwards, I think it said on it "this side towards the cover" or something like that on it too. I mean I could be wrong, but I think it's in the right way.

I am going to purchase new rocker arms today, I just don't want to put them in and have it chew through my new rocker arms in a few hours. Is there anyway for me to check oil pressure or flow directly at the head of the engine? I'd like to check my filter too, but won't I have to drain all my oil out first without it spilling everywhere?

Hmmm ok I'll check that out later (at work right now). While I have the head cover off, i think if I take off that rubber cam cover and run the engine, I should be able to see if oil is getting to the head directly. I believe the oil comes up from there and goes into the cam and squirts out where the rocker arms make contact. I might have some oil spray out but oh well.

The fact that it's wearing about .4mm off the rocker arms within about 2 hours is still hard to believe.

So I installed the new rocker arms and stage 2 cam and went for a few couple hour rides now and it's running perfect! Runs like a monster with the new cam too. Valve lash isn't coming loose or anything either, runs nice and quiet.
