Hello, I have a few questions for those that know about the 250x-
1}I have heard in the past that honda had a problem with the 3rd gear in there 250x an the xr250 also what was the problem an what years was it.
2}My 88 250x when pulling hard ,like a hill will "pop like the chain has a kink an is dry",but it's not the chain.I know it's in the transmission ,but I'm not sure what, do you have any ideas?
3}When I take it down what to look for,maybe a tooth missing,chipped,worn bad
4}could it be a shifting fork?
any input would be greatly appreciated an thank you,Rick{Nv}

My 87 250X lost first and second gear first.The dealer told me that first and second never goe.That it was always third.Well it was first and second.A year later it was third.They said my problem was that I bent the shifting forks and that caused the gears to not lock together.But like you said it sounded like the chain then it got worse.Til it would just grind.If you tear it down you more than likely won't find teeth missing.There are oval holes in some gears and pins in the others.these wear and slipp past each other,hence the grinding noise.

Also you have to tear the whole engine apart to get to them so play it safe and replace all that you find wrong.Don't cheat on parts because it really sucks doing it agian a year later.Good luck.
