Oil Question for Everyone?
#1
What weight oil is everyone running in their 400EX's? The temp. in my area this time of the year gets between 30-50 degrees F. I'm swithing to Amsoil synthetic and don't know if i should go with 10-40 or 10-50. I'd think the 10-40 would be fine for these temps, but i know the 400EX runs hot and my motor is modded. Any opinions?

Because they have no clue & are going on myths & wives tales.
Tell me...
If Synthetic oil is unsafe for camshafts, why can they be used in OHC cars and trucks (even factory fill in some higher-end vehicles), with sometimes upwards of 4 camshafts?
I think the excuse they use it synthetic is "too slippery" and slides off the cam when the engine is shut off..... GIVE ME A FREAKIN' BREAK, Web cams!!!!

Automotive. The only real difference between the 15w50 and 20w50 "V-Twin" oil is some added zinc and some marketing. The 15w50 automotive variety has plenty of zinc and costs $4 vs $8 a quart.

If you don't know who Eric Gorr or Rich Rohrich is, do a little research and you'll see they've got some pretty solid credentials.

Many professional engine rebuilders will tell you not to use synthetic oil during the first several hundred miles or so. It is critical during this time that imperfections in the shape of metal-to-metal surfaces are worn to a more perfect state. For example, it is impossible to produce a perfectly round ball bearing due to the forces of gravity. The same is true for the circular surfaces of camshafts and rod bearings. Because synthetic performs so well against normal friction, these imperfect surfaces can polish over in their imperfect state before proper "bedding" can occur. Conventional oil allows these imperfections to be worn away during the break-in period.
