Default 1987 Honda Foreman

I could use some help. I just recently purchased this ATV knowing that it did not run, but I couldn't beat the price. It hasn't run in about two and half years, so when I brought it home, I tore the carburator apart and clean it, took the air filter off and cleaned that, dumped all the old gas out of it and put in fresh, and blew the tires up. I put a new battery and spark plug in it, and dumped some gas in the cylinder, kicked it over, and it ran for about 5 seconds. Now I don't have any spark. I was thinking that it was a CDI issue, but after reading the forums on here, seems like it could be a number of things, and before I spend $150 on a CDI box, I would like to hear what some of you think, Thanks, Dan

Ino so people on here will comment on my comment buy here it is the redneck way....Get an screwdriver an use the handle end an hit the cdi pretty hard serveral hits while pushing the starter button alot of time this will cause the cdi to spark while hitting it..If it does spark while hitting it then IMO its bad..But sometimes if cdi is completly dead it may not spark....Just an redneck way that has worked for me for over 30 years...Good Luck..

I appreciate the comment, but the starter is smoked. I assume that the guy I bought it from used it so much that they burned it up. I'm stuck kick starting it until I figure out whats wrong with it.

Well, I put a new coil on the machine hoping that I would get out a lot cheaper, still no spark. I guess I will put a CDI box on it, unless anyone else has a better idea.

Any chance you fouled your plug when you dumped gas in the cylinder? I did the exact same thing on my '86 fourtrax to get it to start and I fouled my plug instantly. I wouldn't think you would have a bad cdi if it started once for you. The cdi would had to have been working then, otherwise it would not have started. Try another plug before you buy a new cdi. Hope this helps.

This may sound like a dumb question, but what method are you using for checking for spark?

grounding the plug while rolling the engine. I've used this method for 20 years.

That's a perfectly fine method for checking spark, but do you know that the plug is good? I know you said you put in a new one in, but any chance it got fouled when you put gas in the cylinder? Try a different plug, it's a lot cheaper than buying a new CDI. I don't see how you could have a bad CDI if it started and ran for 5 seconds initially. Good Luck.
