As with anything, I would say its all in how you take care of it.
I have had 2 new bone stock TRX250R's and they were both bullet proof. I still have the '87 and it is still stock and only on its second set of rings. I would say that the R's require more attention then say a utility quad or sport class quad.
As for breaking stuff, you shouldnt have a problem unless you are racing MX every weekend for a solid year. The average play rider shouldnt have a problem.
The 250R is not for a beginner, period.

I have an 86 that is reliblae as heck.Last weekend I put some gas in her kicked her twice and she fired right up!She had been sittin since november! It also starts right up.(unless it is out of gas or fouls a plug)I bought mine stock and it would smoke on pavement the tires without usin the brakes! It would move but the tires where really movin. It was on the original bore to.
Mine has gotten tempramental in woods though. When I put the pipe and silencer and rejeted I jetted it a little rich. Not much but enough where I can hold it open while I am mx racing on the start and not worrying about cooking the piston.
As far as breaking stuff.I haven broken my sidecasing right where the shift shaft enters(where they always break when the chain comes off) and bent my stock axle.Other than that it has been great.
And it is not a begginer's qaud.I have been riding for 11 years and It still is a little scary sometime.and if you are not expecting it she will bite you!
