Don't listen to them!Get a new 300ex they lok freakin sweet and Are as just as good of bikes as 400ex.Sure they are not as fast and don't handle as good.I will never let my dad sell the ex and as soon as I can I am going to buy it from him.The are exclennt qauds as you know and as reliable as a rock.
I had mine stuck in a pond yesterday! My neighbor pulled me out on his LT250F and I checked the air filter and oil they where both dry.I fired her up and rode it the rest of the day!

Ugly - In your first sentence you say that the 300ex is just as good as the 400ex, but then in your second sentence you say the 300ex suspension isn't as good and they are not as fast.. Make up your mind..
i have a 250X and have the option to get a 400ex for a good deal, but choose to keep the 250X instead. The 250X and 300ex are hardly different( just elec start and different stroke), but if I were to do it over, i would have started out with the 400ex. Besides, maybe Stumpy is ready for somethign faster, and then maybe not.
This is the 2nd 250X I have owned and I feel really comfortable on it, but The 400 is much nicer!
