2014 rancher or foreman
I will be getting a new atv when the 2014s come out I would like a honda because of reliability durability and toughness and I would like a straight axle because of stability and I will be getting footshift. I ride in tight trails and in very soft swamps and in sand pits. So let me know what you think I should get.

The Rancher and Foreman are not even in the same class.
The Rancher is a mid sized chassis ATV the Foreman is a Full size.
That changes their towing and load rating and cargo/passenger room.
The rancher comes with small 24" tires and the new 2014 Foreman will be the first Honda 4x4 with diff lock true 4wd.
Sit on a Rancher then sit on a Foreman in the show room they hefty beefy feel of the Foreman is obvious.
The Foreman even has a higher tow and load rating then the 680 Rincon.
When the Foreman is in a shootout it goes up against bigger more expensive ATVs http://www.world-of-atvs.com/4x4-atvs.html The 450 Grizzly is also not a Full size chassis, not sure why its in there.
While the rancher is considered a budget 4x4 ATV and faces a different class all together.

The 2014 Rancher and Foreman are the same ATV platform.
Same chassis, same plastic, and same engine.
With the Foreman you get..
Larger cylinder (475cc over 420cc)
2mm larger throttle body
Higher output stator
Lower 1st & 2nd gear ratios.
1" taller tires. (25" instead of 24")
Front Diff Lock
Handlebar headlight
Any other differences are either minimal or not even worth noting.
I'm not a fan of platform sharing, (The Grizzly 550 & 700 come to mind), but for the extra money for the Foreman,..I guess it depends if you can use extra power and extra lighting. Personally, I would buy the Rancher and invest the money difference into your own choice of tires and wheels.
And just for the record, a 2014 500 Foreman cylinder WILL fit the 2014 420 Rancher,.. making it a Foreman if any future engine work is required.

You right, they seemed to have down sized the Foreman for 2014.
My friend has the 2006 Foreman 500 and when it is parked next to a 420 Rancher it sure is a beefier and physically bigger ATV then the Rancher. Its about the same size as my Sportsman 500 and the 420 Rancher is about the same sizes as my 350 Grizzly.http://www.atvreviewnetwork.com/enth...1=53961&go2=Go
The Foreman does not even have dual rear shocks anylonger just a single shock like the Rancher.
The Foreman at one time was the a full size chassis ATV like the Rincon and Rubicon. http://www.atvreviewnetwork.com/enth...=231151&go2=Go Not the case now I guess. I hope the price drop along with Its size.
